Move over Whoopie Pies! Here come Pofferties.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think cupcakes were the first dessert craze in recent history. People opened cupcake shops, brides selected them as cake alternatives for weddings and we enjoyed more of them as a society in general. Then that was it! No more cupcakes! "Too much!" we cried! Next it was macarons. Previously obscure, they were suddenly appearing in elegant bakeries all over Toronto. Then it was whoopee pies, then cake pops...

Our obsession with the next great dessert has reached an all-time high and I'm pleased as punch to announce that I've found it.

Pofferties (pronounced poff-er-chez) are Dutch mini pancakes and are served on a pleasantly messy plate covered in butter and a smattering of icing sugar. Served with tasty coffee, they are a heavenly, heavenly treat. One serving gives you a good batch of the sweet pancakes, thankfully.

My mom brought us to the aesthetically charming Pofferties shop, recently opened in Charlottetown, PEI. Crisp and clean in black and white, it has a elegant feel inside.

We chatted with the lovely store owner who told us of her plans to expand to Halifax and Toronto in the next six months. We debated ideal neighbourhoods, from Leslieville to the Danforth to The Beach.

Expect to see them in a neighbourhood near you very soon and don't be surprised if you start to see Pofferties everywhere soon enough.
